This recipe is perfect for filling your home with the classic aroma of Christmas.
Ingredients
1 bottle (750ml) inexpensive, dry Red Wine (like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon)
1/2 cup Brandy (optional, for extra kick)
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup Caster (granulated) sugar (adjust to taste)
2 Cinnamon sticks
8 Whole cloves
2 Star anise
1 Orange, sliced (keep the peel on)
Instructions
Combine: Combine the red wine, brandy (if using), water, sugar, cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, and orange slices in a large, non-reactive saucepan.
Heat Gently: Heat the mixture over medium-low heat. Do not boil. Boiling alcohol will cause the alcohol to evaporate quickly, and the taste of boiled wine is unpleasant.
Simmer: Once the sugar has dissolved and the mixture is steaming (just before simmering), reduce the heat to the lowest setting. Let it gently simmer for at least 20 minutes (up to 3 hours) to allow the spices to fully infuse.
Serve: Ladle the hot wine into mugs or heatproof glasses, making sure each serving gets a slice of orange and a piece of spice.
